Putting the 'hot' in your hot water cylinder

Whether you like it or not, until spring comes around it’s going to be cold. As winter sets in we all have our techniques to deal with the cold, a crowd favourite being a steaming hot shower. But it’s not nice shivering naked in the bathroom waiting for the water to heat up. It doesn’t have to be this way, at least not with a hot water heat pump.

How they work

A hot water heat pump is essentially the best friend your hot water cylinder (HWC) didn’t realise it was missing. It works by drawing and heating water as required to ensure that all the hot water is at a constant temperature set by you. The pump sits outside your house just like the one in your living room, except it is placed in a location where it’s as close to the HWC as possible. A simple to use wall controller is installed nearby too, making it easy to adjust the temperature.

Why consider getting one

Aside from the aforementioned chills, when it comes to HWC heating solutions a hot water heat pump comes in cheaper than both solar and gas options. And because they can be fit to most HWC it’s easy to retrofit to the one you have right now or include one in a new home build. Being a local product, they’ve been designed to stand up to New Zealand’s wide range in climate as well; with even performance and efficiency ratings between temperatures as cold as -15°C and as warm as 40°C.
